Location Name:  Frederick Douglass High School (Detroit, Michigan)

Location Type:  Abandoned Site (School)

Year Completed:  1962

Architect(s):  ?

History:

The abandoned Frederick Douglass High School in Detroit was built in 1962 and opened under the name William S. Knudsen Junior High School. At some point during its life the name was changed to Frederick Douglass and became an all-male academy. The building was permanently closed in 2007 and has sat vacant ever since. Many outer walls of the school have been removed by scrappers looking to plunder anything of value, mostly metals that could be sold for scrap. The building is in severe disrepair, the gymnasium has endured a fire and the remainder of the school is open to the elements and vandals. It is likely that the building will be demolished in the near future.
